How do I become a Christian

How do I become a Christian

A Christian is someone who has decided to give their life to Jesus. It is about putting your faith and trust in Jesus. The Bible puts it this way:

Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish!

Ephesians 2 v 8

When Christians talk about being saved it is talking about pulling a drowning person to safety. We might not know we need saving but God does and he implemented the plan long ago to save us!

God makes it easy for you to get right with him. It is as simple as talking to him (this is what prayer is). When I became a Christian, I was asked to read a paragraph of words but what it amounts to is this:

Jesus, here I am I want to follow you and become your follower. Please help me to do this. Amen

Becoming a Christian is also about changing your life, it is something Jesus asks of you that you stop doing wrong (this is sometimes called sin). God is perfect and wants us to be perfect as well. Now he knows we can’t do this so Jesus opened his arms wide and was nailed to a cross. When he died he said, “It is finished”. Those words meant that Jesus has made it possible for us to become perfect.

Becoming perfect is admitting you have done wrong things and saying sorry to Jesus or God the Father. But Jesus asks more, now stop doing the wrong you have been doing. And it keeps going, saying sorry for the wrong you have done and turning away from it (this is called repentance).

Jesus, I have become your follower and I now want to stop doing wrong. Forgive me for all the things I have done and help me to stop continuing to do them Amen

The next step are between you and Jesus. Being a Christian is not a one-off prayer but a lifetime of following Jesus. It is exciting, rewarding, challenging and painful but it is very much worth it.

I would now read Mark’s gospel. This is in the New Testament version of the Bible and can be read here: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+1&version=MSG The Bible is a story about God, and Mark’s gospel tells us about Jesus coming to earth to help us to become Christian’s.

With new technology available we can now download the Bible to our phone and have reading plans. Plans that can take you through the first steps of being a Christian. Anna and I both use YouVersion Bible app. Click the link in your phone to find out more.
